At the center of the UNLV School of Dental Medicine is a vision to provide
professional oral healthcare to all Nevadans. Many of the patients treated
through the school's outreach programs receive care in rural Nevada
communities such as Jean and Sparks. Through these efforts, the school is
able to bring good oral health to all Nevadans - young and elderly alike.
The UNLV School of Dental Medicine is reaching Nevada's communities in
several different ways:
| Patient Community |
| • |
Between 2002 and 2004, the UNLV School of Dental Medicine
treated nearly 87,000 unique Medicaid patients. These patients combined
for over 111,000 patient visits. |
| • |
From July through December 2004, UNLV’s Shadow
Lane Campus treated over 3,000 low income, un-insured, and elderly
dental patients. These patients combined for over 10,000 patient
visits. |
| Community Services |
| • |
Through 2004, the UNLV School of Dental Medicine
student doctors, faculty, and staff have provided oral screening
and education and nutritional instruction to over 10,000 pre-school,
elementary, and high school students. |
| • |
Crackdown on Cancer, a grant-sponsored program offered
through the UNLV School of Dental Medicine, has provided education
and oral screening to over 35,000 high school and middle school students.
Over 30% of the screenings have occurred in rural Nevada communities. |
