Introduction
The UNLV School of Dental Medicine would like to thank you for your interest in our Advanced Education in General Practice Residency program.   This is a one-year program with an optional second year.  This program has been granted full Accreditation Status by the ADA Commission on Dental Accreditation and participates in both the “PASS” and “MATCH” programs.  Requirements for the program include graduation from an ADA accredited dental school and U.S. or Canadian citizenship (or possession of a valid INS Form I-151 or I-551).

Mission
To provide advanced training in clinical and hospital dentistry.  Impart skills necessary for the general dentist to provide comprehensive patient care to all population groups in both clinical and hospital settings will be developed and refined.

Program Overview
A graduate of this program will be able to evaluate the patient’s total oral health needs, provide comprehensive general dental care and learn when to refer the patient to the appropriate specialist while preserving continuity of patient care.

Class size is six residents per year and will begin July 1. Offers a certificate of completion. Clinic is open nine hours a day (7:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.), five days per week. After hours; dental emergency coverage is performed by all residents on a weekly, rotating basis.

The program provides or facilitates:

  • Broad clinical experience and didactic training in all aspects of the practice of modern general dentistry
  • Experience and didactics necessary to develop sound diagnostic, treatment planning and patient assessment skills
  • Close interaction with specialty staff to coordinate comprehensive patient care
  • Exposure and experience in patient treatment in a hospital and/or surgical center atmosphere
  • Insight into the world of dental literature; sets the stage for the development of lifelong learning habits
  • Participation in local, state and /or national Continuing Dental Education to include public speaking
  • Participation in organized dentistry

Rotations in Family Medicine, Anesthesiology and Emergency/Trauma are an essential component of the program. Advanced training in conscious sedation is, also, provided. The resident is expected to successfully complete ACLS and become certified in conscious sedation.
PALS is offered on an optional basis.

Our facility consists of an impressive contingent of specialists and general practitioners, all specifically selected for their broad experience, clinical expertise and ability to share their experience and knowledge with the residents.

The resident will receive hands-on training with state-of-the-art equipment and dental materials including intra-oral video and digital cameras, lasers, micro-abrasion units, digital radiography and use of the surgical microscope. Six microscopes – two Zeiss ProErgo and 4 Global microscopes are available for use.

Upon completion of this program residents will have a working knowledge of:
  • Comprehensive treatment planning involving multiple specialty areas
  • Advanced surgical procedures including incision and drainage, biopsy, preprosthetic surgery, complex surgical extractions
  • Fabrication and insertion of simple and complex fixed and removable prostheses
  • Pediatric Dentistry
  • Orthodontic diagnosis, treatment planning, appliance design and tooth movement
  • Diagnosis, placement and restoration of dental implants utilizing Nobel Biocare, MIS and BioHorizons systems
  • Hospital dentistry
  • Conscious sedation (oral, inhalation and IV)
  • All facets of periodontics including surgical techniques, grafting procedures and internal and external sinus lifts
  • All facets of Endodontics including rotary files utilizing different systems to include Dentsply Tulsa GTX and Vortex files and warm vertical obturation techniques
  • Esthetic dentistry principles and treatment options (ceramic veneers, analysis, esthetic gingival procedures
  • Practice management concepts to facilitate transition into private practice

As an optional two-year program, exceptional residents will be offered the opportunity to continue on for a second year of more advanced training and experience. At the end of the second year of advanced training, the resident will have been exposed to the equivalent of many years of diverse clinical and hospital experience and will depart with abilities and knowledge levels far above that of their peers.

Program Expenses
All fees pertaining to obtaining a “Limited License” to practice dentistry in the State of Nevada”.

Application
All applications to the UNLV School of Dental Medicine Advanced Education in General Practice Residency will be processed through the ADEA Postdoctoral Application Support Service (PASS). PASS simplifies the application process by providing one standardized format. Please refer to their website (www.adea.org) for detailed information regarding our program. Minimum requirements for applicants to be considered for our graduate program are as follows: Applicant must be in good moral and academic standing, proficient in the English language, currently enrolled in, or have graduated from, an accredited U.S. or Canadian Dental School and have successfully completed National Boards Part I examination. Passage of National Boards Part 2 is required for “Limited Licensure”. No supplemental application is needed.

When application is submitted through PASS, no additional documentation is required. If PASS is not utilized, we request the following documentation be sent to the UNLV School of Dental Medicine – General Practice Residency (mailing address provided below).

  1. Three letters of recommendation, two from specialists
  2. Short essay on your interest in graduate training and our GPR program

Admission
Selection is based on National Board scores, dental school transcripts, class rank, letters of recommendation, applicant essay and the interview process. Applicants are categorized based on qualitative and quantitative criteria to determine which applicants will be offered interviews and to, subsequently, rank order applicants for the MATCH program. Interviews will generally be held during the first two weeks of December. Arrangements can be made to interview at other times on a case by case basis. The MATCH results will be released at the end of January.
